Pod ním najdete pět dalších tváří téže ženy, označených A až E. Každá nese jeden z pěti postojů, o kterých bude řeč: smutek, vzdor, vyhýbání, péči a přijetí.

A teď to podstatné.

Dejte dnešní tváři to, co jí sluší, ne to, co by mít měla.

Řešení hádanky

A přijetí, B vzdor, C péče, D smutek, E vyhýbání. Smutek a vzdor jste možná poznali hned.

Five Faces of the Soul

Women in the second half of life respond to the changes in their faces in five ways. Two you can read from facial expression, three from the gaze, the grooming and the color of their clothes. Try to guess the five faces before you read what lies behind them.

One woman described her mornings like this. She looks in the mirror, and the mirror asks her who the woman across from her is. Inside, she feels the same as ever. Outside, she sees someone she is only beginning to know.

First comes a baseline portrait of one woman, calm and without any particular expression. Below it you will find five more faces of the same woman, marked A to E. Each carries one of the five attitudes this piece is about: sadness, resentment, avoidance, care and acceptance. Try to match them before you read on. The answers are at the end.

Where the five faces come from

A study from Israel invited 19 women aged 54 to 76. In small online groups, the women watched clips from films with older protagonists and then talked about how they experience the changes in their faces. Five attitudes emerged from what they said. They are not steps on a staircase leading to victory. One woman can move through all of them in a single week.

The sample is small, most of the women had a university education, and the conversations took place during the pandemic, when people saw their own faces on screen more often than usual. So the study measures nothing. It shows how women talk about it, and for this puzzle that is enough.

Sadness

🌧️ Sadness usually comes first. A woman feels young, but the mirror and other people’s eyes tell her something else. One participant summed it up by saying that only the soul remains, and the soul is still young. The psychologist Paul Ekman described what sadness looks like on a face. The inner corners of the eyebrows rise and draw together, and the corners of the mouth turn down. Most of us recognize this face at first glance. Whether the whole world reads it the same way is something experts still argue about.

Resentment

🔥 Resentment is anger. It is not aimed at wrinkles, it is aimed at a double standard. The women talked about TV shows where aging men are allowed to have white hair, while every cosmetic procedure shows on the actresses. What bothered them was that something accepted as natural in men is treated in women as a problem to be fixed. Anger shows on the face in eyebrows pulled down, narrowed eyelids and pressed lips. In the portrait, this face looks straight into the camera. But it is looking at the world, not at you.

Avoidance

🌫️ The third face would rather not look in the mirror. One woman admitted that she doesn’t put her glasses on in the morning, because without them she can’t see the wrinkles. It may be a way of protecting her peace of mind. It may also be a quiet estrangement from herself. From the outside, both look the same. The women in the study also talked about how uncomfortable it was to see themselves for hours in a video-call window. You can avoid a mirror, but not a camera. In the portrait, this face gives itself away only through a gaze that slips down and to the side.

Care

💄 The fourth face brushes her hair and puts on lipstick before leaving the house. One participant put it simply: not like Barbie, not like a star. Just put together, because it makes her feel better. Care isn’t revealed by facial expression but by the way a woman has groomed herself. In the portrait, it is the brushed hair, light makeup and a collared blouse. None of it hides anything. It continues what she has done all her life. One participant’s daughters remind her to wear lipstick. Another remembered her mother, who still made herself up at ninety-eight.

Acceptance

🌿 The fifth face has stopped fighting. Several women stopped dyeing their hair during the pandemic and described a great sense of relief. Some started wearing bold colors so they wouldn’t disappear among other people. One said that an older woman has to make a real effort, or she turns transparent.

Now the part that matters. The authors point out that stopping dyeing does not, on its own, set anyone free. The same gray hair can mean freedom or resignation. The same makeup can be joy or obligation. What decides it is whose gaze a woman carries inside her, her own or someone else’s.

One question in the morning

A face doesn’t have to stay just one face forever. It may be more useful to ask each morning which of the five is looking out today. Sadness only needs you to let it be for a while instead of covering it up right away. Resentment suits a straight back and a color that makes you feel strong. Avoidance deserves kindness, even a morning without glasses. Care belongs to a hairbrush and a few minutes at the mirror just for yourself. Acceptance belongs to a color that lets people see you. Give today’s face what suits it, not what it is supposed to have.

The answers

A acceptance, B resentment, C care, D sadness, E avoidance. You may have recognized sadness and resentment right away. The others were harder, because facial expression doesn’t give them away. The grooming, the color of the clothes and the direction of the gaze do.

Five faces are not five mistakes on the way to the one right face. They are five ways a person comes to terms with their own face. The next time you look in the mirror, you don’t have to judge right away. It is enough to recognize which face is looking back at you and give it what it needs today.
